Pedal into History

Hey folks,
It's time again to celebrate the joy of cycling. This month we are taking some history lessons with cycling.
Let's ride towards one of the less famous towers of Kempegowda in Gavipuram Guttahalli. The tower is on a small hillock overlooking the Kembambudhi lake. If on time, we can view a beautiful sunset and move on the the Gavi Gangadhareshwara Cave temple.
Both the tower and the temple were built by Kempe Gowda referred to as the founding father of Bangalore.
We will be ending the ride at the VV Puram - Food Street and indulge in some carb loading.

So, Pedal up folks. Pull out those cameras and keep those bellies empty on Feb 27th.

Hi all,
A very happy new year to all cyclists!

What better way to start this year's critical mass rides than by being part of a documentary on Climate Change Mitigation. 'Agents of Change' is one of the short movies being made under the UK Environment Film Fellowships 2010. You are not just cyclists, you are agents of change. This documentary might be aired on Nat Geo, Discovery and the like.

Please participate in large numbers - we are trying to get some bikes for rent. Please confirm with Rakesh (9 double8 six zero seven 55 seven 5) of Track and Trail before Wednesday - 27th Jan - if you are interested in renting a bike.
We also have a handful of CM T-shirts available at Rs. 185, so please book early.

Critical mass Bangalore turns 1 and guess who's coming!

Itz one year since we started the critical mass movement in Bangalore. So, this month's CM has gotta be special. This is the plan as of now.We invite you to take the lead, be creative, and celebrate.

The plan:
Start from Cubbon park at 4:30 pm - sharp. Ride around
5:30 pm - A biker to Public activity (tentative)
6:30 pm - Gather at Track n Trail in Koramangala for a night ride.
7:00 pm - Head to food street, V V Puram for snacks.
Plan to wind up by 9 pm.

You can join from either Cubbon Park or Koramangala.

We have got some T-shirts made for CM (sizes - S, M, L).
T-shirts can be collected from the Track n Trail store at Koramangala from Thursday, 26th Nov onwards.

Bikes will be available on rent too, so get your family and friends along. Just let us know.

And surprise surprise! Guess who is planning to join us! The father of Critical Mass!

Mass at malls

It is really funny that some of our malls and the bazaars have parking space for cars but cannot accomodate cycles in their parking lots. So, itz time to gather some mass at these malls and create some fuss.

So, here we go with our CMR for October -
Starting point : Bangalore Press Club, Cubbon park
Date: 31st October, Saturday
Time: 4:30 pm
Final destination: Forum Mall & Big Bazaar, Koramangala
Route: We'll figure out before we start, as usual - very well planned ;)

The plan is to go to forum and big bazaar and try and shop - but before we do that, we need to park our cycles. And to our surprise, we find that we cannot park our 'vehicles' there - so what do we do now? We go in and write a suggestion - each one of us - for cycle parking. Since we somehow anticipated this, we also carry with us nice little posters and letters to give to the management.

Folks staying near Koramangala, do join us at forum at around 5:30 if you cannot join us at Cubbon park.

On Your Bike - August CM

After a month of long weekend rides, office commutes, a mini CM and BBCh it’s the time of the month to show our love for biking. Let’s meet for Critical Mass Bangalore as usual..

The theme for this month is

"ON YOUR BIKE"

Yeah! get on your bike and start pedaling.

The phrase originated in Wales in the 19th century.

Long long ago in the Welsh Valleys, the young men married local girls. And after several generations, in really small communities, everybody was closely related to everyone else.

The advent of the bicycle was a godsend and many a young man was told to 'get on your bike' when he came calling on his 1st cousin once removed. So it was a quick pedal over the hills and far away to find a fresh wife.

It's other meanings include "get outta here","Get lost" and "Go get yourself a Job". And now we conveniently twist the phrase to mean...."On your bike"- to cars, - to pollution, -green house gases.

Lets hear it for the bicycle.

Bangalore needs you! Unite & ride to make Bangalore 'cool' again

Long long ago.. actually, not so long ago, there was a nice long road with huge trees on either side and students and elders alike used to cycle to their school/college/workplace. The same could be said about most of the roads in Bangalore until one fine day when the world realized what a 'cool' place Bangalore is and the rest is history.
Cliched as it may seem, a lot of people say Bangalore has gotten warmer in the last 10 years.

So, here's our teeny weeny bit to reclaim the Bangalore that we know of. Join us as we spread the message of cycling in Bangalore.

This edition of Critical Mass is registered at UNEP as one of the World Environment Day activities. Watch this space for our event to be featured.

This month the beloved 'Bangalore Bikers Club' is celebrating its 2nd Anniversary and Critical Mass is hosting the party :)

From under 100 bikers in 2007 to almost 900 in 2009.. and still growing.

From 'Which bike do I buy?' to 'Help, I lost my bike' .. from 'Nandi ride tomorrow' to 'I cycled to office today'.. From 'weekend rides' to 'Bangalore Bicycle Championships'! We sure have come a long way. Time to celebrate now.

Each one Get one - The April Critical Mass

It is a hot summer afternoon. It is the last Saturday of the month. Some fellas on their cycles @ Cubbon Park, yay! It has to be Critical Mass!!

Taking a clue from the very successful March Critical Mass, the target was set – “Each One Get One”. But surprisingly the attendance had halved! Was it the hot weather? Or the rain forecast? Or did the Bangalore cyclists took a clue from assembly polls !? Well.. You gotta tell me.

Starting at 4 the cyclists started trickling in slowly near the Bangalore Press Club in Cubbon park. There were a lot of new faces around as many of them actually “got in” someone. [So, in effect the attendance was 1/4^th ;) ]. There were also a bunch of enthusiastic wannabee bikers from Infosys who thought they would get bikes at the venue.. thanks to a desperate attempt by Lavanya to get more bikers. Sadly, Omar wasn’t there this time around and we could not help them out with bikes L - hmm..Time to collect some solid data on bike rentals.

Once there was a substantial headcount a poll was conducted to choose the route. The Koramangala Sony world junction route won the count of hands [Other routes were Frazer town and Madhavan park]. So, we headed off from Cubbon Park around 5 pm.

The mass took a huge loop through Vidhana soudha-Nrupatunga Road-Kasturba Road and reached back the Cubbon Park entrance. Meanwhile, Prasath had a flat and broke off from the group. The traffic on Kasturba road made the bikers switch to footpath.. yay! Even pushing our bikes we were faster than the traffic J. Drifting over the MG road downhill, we squeezed through traffic from Brigade road to Garuda mall. Some more riders joined us at Garuda. And yes, it was time for a bike salute.

As the Rain Gods threatened to pour down, the mass started off from Garuda and slowly headed towards Koramangala via Richmond road, Mother Theresa road, Austin town, Viveknagar and National Games Village. At NGV there was an ad-hoc change in plan and we headed towards the playground in Koramangala 6^th block. At the playground it was once again time for a series of bike salutes before the group dispersed.

Each One Get One !!

Hello Everybody ...
Earthday is almost here and we need to contemplate on means to contain this destruction that we are inflicting on Mother Earth. Let us all start with small steps.

This time we request all the old riders to get one more rider with them. They say 'it all starts with sensitisation' and so be it. Make your friends aware of whats happening around them and how you are trying to make a difference by taking to bicycles. Bring them along to the Critical Mass this time and have them experience the fun in being green :) So see you all same place same time !!

Ride Report of Sumeet Hanspal's first Critical Mass

Finally, the day had come, 28th of March 2009. The day I have been waiting for enthusiastically from last one and half months. After getting my afternoon nap, I wake up at 2.30 pm to get ready to start to join a group of nature lovers and fit people.

To be sure that I join the CM on time, I decided to make a note of the numbers of the point of contact, in case if I am not able to find the place where the Critical Mass riders assemble. I made a note of 2 numbers and started at 3.15 pm after having bit of lunch. That was the first day I was riding cycle in day time (I do in the morning every weekend) and I was bit skeptical of the traffic as it was Saturday afternoon (most of the people start from their home to enjoy their Saturday evening at this time), but luckily (and surprisingly!!) there was no traffic and I had a good ride. I reached Cubbon Park via Vidhan Soudha and was looking for aquarium, without success. Then I called up one of the number I had with me and it was Sriram's. He guided me to reach aquarium and then the place where we all assemble.

I reached there at around 3.45 PM and found about 20 people. Also I saw one gentleman doing some checks on water for people surrounding him. People were anxious to know how clean the water which they drink every day, is. That gentleman was Sharda. I saw one more charming gentleman screaming at people asking them to park their bikes on pavement and having them enter their email id and phone number on his laptop. He was Prasant Mohanty, humble and decent man. I also must mention one of the guys, who really made a difference, Murli, who was looking like Lord MurliGopal himself ;)
Also I saw two ladies with full energy wearing pink t-shirts, reminding me the motto of this CM – Just Pink it! People were coming in slowly and the number was increasing by every minute. Then came the most beautiful and daring girl I have ever seen, Maya, around 4-5 years old, on her cycle, wearing all the safety gear. There was a warm feeling all around the place to see such a
enthusiastic and nature loving kid. And also we were celebrating Woman's Day this CM which made her presence all the more special. There were paparazzi also (from ZEE TV and Bangalore Mirror), to cover the most happening event of the city and to take picture of handsome guys and brainy girls. (God knows whether when they will show the event in TV and publish in newspaper). By 4.30 PM, we were ready to start, when we started counting the number of participants and we were 75 strong!!

Prasant distributed five posters which need to be displayed at intersection to ensure that riders and drivers of vehicles understand what we are up to and to enable CM bikers to pass through without any difficulty in always crowded Bangalore roads. With the bold and beautiful ladies leading us, we started towards Sankey tank, which was not covered before in any of the CM ride. Riding towards destination in a steady pace, I made some friends Jalil, Amit & Yogan. I came to know how many people cycle to work and how frequently they go for long rides in weekend. When we reached Le Meridian (no no...we didnt go inside the F Bar), we got to know that we need to wait for other people who are left behind. After around 5 minutes, we started again with the missing people towards Sankey tank. When waiting for missing people to join, our dear guest Craig's cycle suffered a flat and I guessed that it was the end of his ride. However I was surprised to know how professional he to be carying a spare tube with him. Within few minutes, he changed the tube and we started again.

There was some confusion regarding the route when we reached the temple near Sankey tank and we were waiting for others to come back (who had gone towards Yaswanthpur). After some time, when all had assembled near the temple did a grand bike salute by raising our bicycles upside down above our head (thanks to Jalil to tell me how to hold the cycle properly with ease). After some pictures, we headed towards a scarcely crowded destination around the lake. There was some discussion on the route planning as the ride did not go as per the plans and we decided to come up with more robust plan for the next CM rides. There were some suggestions of all wearing the same kind of T shirts next time in CM to help spread the awareness of cycling and CM club more from the next CM ride. As we had lot of new people joining this ride, we started having introduction session so that we all can know each other better. Around 15 people introduced themselves, some with the voice that shook the nearby buildings and some with voice, not even the passing mosquito under their nose, can hear.

Finally, it was end of the CM ride for March and people started leaving. Some of the guys, Prasant, Sriram, Jalil, Amit, myself etc went to have Idlis in Malleswaram. While having hot and tasty idli, we all listened the story of Sriram transforming himself from a baby elephant in the schools days to the current human being that he is. On my return, I was a happy man, happy that I decided to join this wonderful community, filled with such wonderful people from different
sphere of life. I will remember this day as a day when I did something which I was always wanted to do, cycling, wind running through my hair.... I am sure that this is not the end of the journey but the start of one...and I also know that with company like ours, this journey will
be memorable.

The setting was picture perfect. Sunlight was getting scattered by patches of clouds and riders were dropping in one by one into the lap of the homely shadows of Cubbon Park. Sharada was busy testing water samples brought by riders (A big thanks to him !!) and our youngest ever rider, Maya had just arrived (She was such an inspiration for all of us ...). This was just the beginning of a wonderful evening. ZEE Kannada and Bangalore Mirror guys dropped in from nowhere and had a bite of the CM fever. The atmosphere was charged up and there was no loooking back. The route had to be towards West Bangalore obviously because it had not been covered in the earlier rides at all. So 5 ladies set out leading a pack of 75 strong riders from Cubbon park at 4.50pm and they were heading towards Sankey Tank, Malleshwaram. The ride was small but sweet. Placards were used to spread awareness amongst the motorists at traffic intersection and the ride ended at a silent corner of the tank where the riders had a chance to interact on core issues of Critical Mass. Two riders have volunteered to look after the Blogspot and all the developments in that area. will be notified very soon.
When the riders went their ways a small pack headed for Veena stores for some hot idlys and tea. How did you find this Critical Mass ?? WRITE TO US !!
And dont take the comments of Prasant seriously guys ..! He is a jerk ... a big Joker ... :P

CRITICAL MARCH !!

JUST PINK IT is the word this time :)

With the theme of 'Women Power' we want to invite all the ladies and girls of Bangalore to an experience of coming back to cycling... and what better place to do it than Critical Mass. This time, the CM is banking on the ladies :) Men and children are welcome as always :)
Whats special this month ?!?
1) As its already clear by now... This CM is centered around the theme of Women Power (we just celebrated Women's Day). So our buzz word is JUST PINK IT !! We are inviting more and more women to participate this time.
2) Second reason is too tempting :). All riders can get water samples from their houses to the venue of Critical Mass.Water testing kits are gonna be there !! Sharada from Arghyam will help test the water sample for fluoride, nitrate and bacteriological content. (We just passed the World Water Day recently). It is not the availability of water but its quality that is bringing down the life expectancy of people in developing countries. Water quality test is free and it takes about 6 minutes to test a sample of water. So Arghyam activists will be at the venue with three sets of kits. Please make best use of this opportunity to know the unknowns of your water :)
3) This time we are also trying to collect funds for a very unfortunate sportswoman of INDIA. Savita Goudar hails from the family of a vegetable seller and a daily wage labourer, and she has won laurels for Karnataka as a national level cyclist and was a national champion. To support her dream of participating in international events and to buy competition standard bicycle she had to mortgage her house . While returning from her routine training she was hit by a tempo sometime back last year and now being unable to pay the loan her family is on the verge of losing their small house. We are going to collect as much amount of funds we can to help her and her
family out. Please hand over the donations to Prasant at the Critical Mass spot.

To participate, just pick a bike and drop in to the venue. Its happening at the Cubbon Park, near the Bangalore Press Club (Just reach the Bangalore Press Club and u can find us there..) Enter Cubbon Park from MG.Road side (Jewels De Paragon). Check the Coordinates at Googlemaps and Wikimapia. At the Govt. aquarium take a right turn and follow the road as it winds and reach the dead end. You will find us... Call us up if you need help with directions. For numbers please refer to the list of Point Of Contacts on the panel of the blog. Women will lead the ride and men will follow...JUST PINK IT !!

The way it went the 4th time :)

The Critical Mass is gaining momentum in Bangalore. 5 women riders were undoubtedly the highlight of the event. !!! Needless to say the next one will be errrrrrrrr... so feminine :P (March is famous for Woman's day and we are looking for a lot of motivation at the CM in March). February's CM had 60 riders to be precise. 56 riders finished the route, 3 split on airport road and 1 on MG road itself.
There were attempts to improve the communication mechanism this time, with the introduction of walkies-talkie's and a megaphone except, they weren't used all that much :) . This time guys were shouting their way to convey directions and corking streets to help the bunch clear important junctions. Though many riders may argue that the later is wrong, the ones corking the street were apologizing (on behalf of the whole CM pack) to the public for the delay caused and making sure the impression they put was a positive one. Kudos to all the riders !! Next time onwards we can hopefully use these gadgets efficiently.

The route was shorter this time and the group focused on staying together.

'My 1st Hand Experience' by Srikanth Karra

Hi,
This Critical Mass was not only my first CM but also my first long ride on a bicycle. I am really thrilled to share my experience with all the riders and visitors following your blog. The ride was awesome :) It's my first cycle ride after 7 long years and it was filled with a lot of fun and a bit of pain. I rode around 40 KM on the not-so-beautiful-and-polluted roads of Bangalore city covering both Northern & Southern parts.

The thought of cycling came to my mind when Prasant, my colleague put a mini-poster of 'Critical Mass' on the dashboard at our workplace. Initially, I was clueless as I don't have a bicycle with me. Later, Prasant assured me that there are a few givers (Thanks a lot, Prasant :)) . I mailed Pradeep and got a green sign for a bike for the CM4 day. This was something to cheer about :D !!
On the day of CM4, Pradeep & I started off from Banashankari III stage to J.P.Nagar where we met some passionate bikers. They joined us on the ride to Cubbon Park. We reached there by 4:30 pm to find another fifty bikers who just want the world to be greener. I tried Lavanya's Strida which was amazing. I was more than just amused with alll the activity happening around me. From then on, the ride was a lot more interesting and exciting. At M.G.Road the chain slipped off the crank wheel and many bikers were there to lend their helping hands, without my asking for help. This is something amazing! They don't even know me, but the event brought us together. :)
We all stopped @ Vidhana Soudha to show our passion for green by lifting our cycles. We caught the eyes of the Police, the commuting general public and the media too.
Hip hip hurray! We reached the destination, KFC @ 100-feet road, Indiranagar. And we all showed our enthusiasm by doing a final bike salute. This act definitely caught the attention of all those who pollute the environment with their machines. Hope they change sooner than later!
BTW back at 100-feet road when everything was over, my mind was gripped with the big challenge of riding all the way to Banashankari III stage to hand over the bicycle to Pradeep. It must be around 16 KM long [:o]. With all the hope I started, being accompanied by Shivaram, Yogesh, and Mr. X (I have a very bad memory !) These three guys helped me more than once when the bike put me into troubled waters. It couldn't have been that easy a ride for me, without those three guys. I'm particularly thankful to them [:)]
The rehydration...
We had to stop @ Cane-o-la to rehydrate ourselves. We sipped two glasses each and took two snaps and slipped to each others' ways. Later, I got a delicious treat @ Pradeep's home (I'm very thankful to Pradeep & his family members for all the hospitality). I left the place with a happy heart and a relaxed mind :)

The CM of 31st Jan 09'

The afternoon of 31st January was a soothing sight for the sore eyes of Bangalore. A looooooong group of riders dominated the streets. No previous CM rides had started this early. After 3.30pm the riders started pouring into KSRTC Central Office, our venue for this years' first CM. By 4.30pm the place was packed with more than 60 riders. Everyone was impatiently waiting for the workshop to get over so that the remaining riders could join in. Finally at 5pm the ride started with more than 70 cyclists. This time the group followed a different road till Garuda Mall encompassing Vidhana Soudha and other parts of central Bangalore. The ride ended at Forum.

Rules Of Critical Mass

Critical Mass is a classic act of 'organized coincidence'. It aims at getting you back your piece of road (your habitat) . The very format of the ride, makes it very important for one to get acquainted with the rules.

1) On the Spot !!

The routes of most of the rides are decided spontaneously at the spot, on the day of the ride. The term xerocracy was coined to describe a process by which the route for a Critical Mass can be decided: anyone who has an opinion makes their own map and distributes it to the cyclists participating in the Mass. Still other rides decide the route by consensus. The "disorganized" nature of the event allows it to largely escape clampdown by authorities who may view the rides as forms of parades or organized protest.

In a Critical Mass, there are no leaders, there are only 'massers'. The ride is strictly non-competitive in nature and is meant for riders of all ages, shapes and sizes :) With the revised timings of the Critical Mass in Bangalore, more and more ladies and kids are joining bicyclists to take to the streets to promote bicycling as the best means of urban transit.

3) Go Slow !

At Critical Mass, we strive to get attention on the streets. We naturally achieve this by the sheer size of our gathering. To add more impact we need to go slow. (Remember CM is not a race and we are in on hurry). The massers at the front set the pace and are usually aware of the routes. So dont worry about speed and just roll along.. At busy intersections where roads need to be caped or at places where we re-group, we indulge in a bike salute.

4) Don't get a permit

Cars don't need permits to ride on the streets, and neither should cyclists. Authorities may ask you to get a permit or may threaten to arrest if you ride without a permit. If you choose not to ride or choose to get the permit, then you've just allowed the authorities an upper hand in the whole struggle. You ride to demonstrate that, to cycle in your city you don't have to feel threatened and subdued. Its your right to avail equal privileges as a commuter, and the city should acknowledge that and change itself to this. The point of Critical Mass is that biking is a right, not a privilege.

5) Follow the Law

We recommend all riders to obey all traffic laws, especially the one-way street restrictions and traffic lights. Remember, the respect we seek as cyclists must be matched by our respect for the rights of other people, including pedestrians and drivers. Also it is absolutely necessary that all the riders use their helmets. !!

6) Spread a word

Spreading the word about local Critical Mass rides is an important part of the sustainability process. We try to come up with generic as well as monthly posters for the ride. Every month, please do send out a mail to your colleagues, friends and near & dear informing/reminding them of this unique ride. Remember, it is a celebration and gives the local cycling community (amateur cycling enthusiasts, casual riders & committed cyclists) a chance to have a good time together... so, use it wisely.
We are considering local media as well as FM Radio channels for spreading the word. Another way of looking at it is through social networking websites like Facebook etc. Please volunteer to initiate similar efforts in Twitter, Orkut, hi5 etc and do let us know about it.. Please don't forget to update and standardize the content every month. Also you can put up fliers at local bike shops and repair terminals.

7) Add some Spice ! Get creative.

The idea is to add as much variety as possible. A great placard OR some kind of a funny hat OR self made t-shirt with a message or even a poster put up against ur shirt can do the job. Everybody doesn't necessarily have to be dressed alike. Use as much colour and fun into your works as possible. More importantly you can choose to highlight issues that affect you in your day to day commute. Riders can hand out one-sided fliers and promote the ride. We personally suggest that you use wasted sheets of printouts from your office for this and do a little reusability of scrap paper. Put your sense of self-expression to the best possible use :)

8) Avoid Confrontation

To be assertive on the road doesn't mean that we have to be stubborn and rude to other motorists. This certainly doesn't help. Critical Massers make it a point to be friendly to motorists, such as smiling and waving -- even smiling and waving back when motorists are honking and cursing at them. Some go even farther, hand out flowers, hold signs saying "Sorry for the delay", or passing out fliers apologizing for the minimal once-a-month delay, and explain why we ride.

9) Do I block traffic ??

Most controversies surrounding our practice involve blocked traffic. While massers are fond of saying things like "We're not blocking traffic, we ARE traffic!", a general motorist struck at an intersection might not be amused. Please be reminded that CM is supposed to be a celebration of cycling, not your opportunity to see how much inconvenience you can cause to others. It's about asserting our right to the road, not denying others their right to the road.

As much as possible, keep to the left and practice road sharing. Leave space for cars to travel. Remember that one act of unjustified agitation or untimely revolt can invite trouble. You are doing CM to show motorists how much fun biking can be, and not to piss them off because just cos it makes you feel good. If you find riders to be demonstrating rude behaviour or causing nuisance, please help them calm down and motivate them to avoid diverging from the real intentions of Critical Mass.

10) Preparedness for Police Intervention

The police may or may not show up at your ride. (But if you consistently take every single traffic lane or harass motorists, then they almost certainly will.) If they show up, they may harass you for breaking traffic laws, or they may harass you even if you're not breaking any laws. Your best defense against unreasonable police action is a video camera. (Though in some cases, police have improperly confiscated cameras and tapes). Remember as long as we dont break rules, we are safe and just in our actions. A rider from Austin has given some tips on how to handle a police intervention. While much of it is specific to the modus-operandi of the US Police Department, a lot of that information is also suitable for us as well. Critical Mass is a bike ride, not an organization, and no two riders participate for exactly the same reason. "What is Critical Mass?" is a question that has as many answers as participants. The only real way to answer the question is to join the ride yourself. So what are you waiting for ???

The Critical Mass movement started in San Francisco on the Last Friday of September in the fall of 92. Following suit, a lot of cities around the world have started their own rides. Preserving the spirit of Critical Mass, different cities follow their own timings and dates of the month to complement local habits. However some have diverged/moved ahead of the concept and started similar rides but with starkly contrasting dates of the month to preserve originality :)

Do have a look and get surprised :) Like Critical Mass, the many other rides that have become famous around the world are mostly aggressive in nature. What is a Critical Mass ?

Critical Mass has been perceived as a psychological phenomena by many. It is a sociodynamic term to describe the existence of sufficient momentum in a social system such that the momentum becomes self-sustaining and fuels further growth. For example, consider a big city. If a person stops and looks up at the sky, nothing will happen. People nearby will go on about their business. However, if three people stop and look up at the sky, perhaps some people will momentarily turn around, but then continue on their way. In a Critical Mass only a small number of people is required to cause others to stop and analyze. This number is usually called the "critical mass" or tipping point.

Critical Mass in Cycling :
Critical Mass has been used as a weapon for bicycle advocacy and we have caught up to the idea. In the last few decades Bangalore has increasing become more negligent to bicycle commuters and pedestrians. Here the Critical Mass is targeted to educate motorist about the presence of cyclists on the road, raise issues that concern pedestrians and cyclists; and to demonstrate that cycling is a healthy possibility that every citizen in Bangalore should experience and benefit from.

Critical Mass in Bangalore :
Its held on the LAST SATURDAY OF EVERY MONTH in Cubbon Park in Bangalore. Inside Cubbon Park, we gather near the gate of the Bangalore Press Club at 4.00pm and it is not a demo or a mob buildup. It is simply a group of people who decide to ride around the city in the same direction. If there are enough cyclists on the ride then it'll go 'CRITICAL' - a mass of cyclists that can take over a road and ride together in safety. The bicycling community also uses this ride to gather up, socialize and debate on essential issues that affect cyclists and non-motorized commuters everyday. This also becomes the place to decide on further action that needs to be taken up with local authorities. In Bangalore, more and more people are turning to cycling as a preferred alternative for commuting. Keeping this in mind we have our work cut out and CM is an important exercise to ascertain the rights of bikers in Bangalore.

The Third One : January 09'

We are back with some major changes in the format. All of this has been done keeping maximum bicycle riders and commuters of Bangalore in focus. The 3rd edition Critical Mass of Bangalore is special in many ways.

1) From now on its happening on your favoured weekend SATURDAY :) and you dont have to wait long for it either. Be there at the venue at 4PM from this time onwards.
2) This time (on the 31st of January), it is coinciding with the Bangalore Cycling Inclusive Planning Workshop which is a first-of-its-kind initiative to promote the setup of cycling infrastructure for Bangalore. So we hope that this time the Critical Mass riders can start the ride from the venue of the workshop which is at the KSRTC Central Office on Double Road. WE ARE CHANGING !!!

Hi All, There is an important announcement.
After taking the feedback of 110 bikers from Bangalore we were able to find very convincing answers to some questions that were bugging us for some time now. So here are the important changes we are going to make in the coming Critical Mass rides.
1. Change in Event Day : Last Saturday of the Month
2. Change in Event Time : 4.30pm departure
3. Change in Event Venue : From February 09' onwards we will be starting from Cubbon Park. We will be posting exact coordinates later. This time (January 09') we are going to join our cycling friends at the KSRTC Central Office on Double Road which would be hosting the Cycling Inclusive Planning Workshop on the 31st of January. All the riders can show their solidarity to this novel initiative.
3. Critical Mass POC's : Bangalore's Critical Mass will have 8 Points Of Contacts. Spread across Bangalore, these POC's are will be available through email and cell phone for any generic queries about the Critical Mass movement in Bangalore. A list of names and mail ID's of all the POC's will be put up shortly.

In the different participating bike forums (primarily Bangalore Bikers Club, Bikeszone.com) many riders have expressed concerns over certain aspects of the Critical Mass in Bangalore. 2nd Critical Mass D'cember 08

The Second Edition CM Bangalore. kicked off from Lalbagh West Gates with an enthusiastic bunch of 26 riders. Though majority of the old riders were found missing because of Tour Of Nilgiris there was no dearth of excitement. After the initial exchange of words the riders decided to do the same route as the last time with a number of pitstops thrown in.

Prabhakar Rao of "Go Green Go Cycling" fame came with his little surprise... his T-shirts :)Armed with a message for a cleaner environment through cycling on their skins, the 26 riders savoured the trip to the core. A lot of new faces were seen and everyone was seen enjoying this particular friday since most had vacations going on and were riding high on the holiday spirit and the christmas cakes. Some of the riders who are students of local colleges used the CM as an excuse for a deserved break from their study regimen for their ongoing varsity exams.

We thank fellow bikers from all corners of Bangalore for the fantastic support they have shown. Please feel free to leave you comments and suggestions ! They are valued.

1st Critical Mass @ Bangalore

The curtains fell
Critical Mass is an international event held on the last Friday of every month to celebrate bicycles and other human powered modes of transport over cars and motorcycles. India has finally caught up to the phenomena. BANGALORE hosted its first CRITICAL MASS on the 27th day of November 08 from the West gates of Lalbagh at its peak 7pm Bangalore traffic. Thirty one enthusiastic bike lovers turned up for the event. It was a good turnout considering the fact that the event was put together in less than a week‘s time. Many of these riders are folks commuting regularly to work on their cycles and do long weekend rides for recreation as well. And then there are the so called pros who join bicycling events like these for the fun of being part of an activity they love and admire ! This event saw some bikers sport some very cool bikes from the stable of renowned brand names like Trek; Merida; Strida; Raleigh etc that spoke of their owners' commitment to serious cycling. There were a variety of mountain bikes, road bikes & foldables that they came riding on to the venue.

The Minutes...
As the time came nearer, more and more cyclists arrived at the Lalbagh West gates. Apparently the local police was interested in pestering the bikers for parking on the pavement so we instructed them to move to a starting point little away from the gates of lalbagh and past the bus stop. At about 7 PM, all thirty cyclists took off mostly in double files, along a route that was made up on the spur of the moment!

The Reaction...
The atmosphere was charged up because it was the first time that the city was witnessing a untamed bunch of 30 cyclists together. There were many curious onlookers along the way and traffic junctions where the traffic cops were actually stopping the traffic to let the cyclists go!!!! It was great as all the bikers made their way on the now very narrow MG Road and then Brigade Road in a single line.

The History...
The first Critical Mass event was organised on 25th September 1992 in San Francisco, USA. Over the years, citizens of 300-odd cities across the world have embraced the concept. Critical Mass events have participants not only on cycles, but also on skateboards and wheelchairs.

All over the world, Critical Mass (CM) is done on the last Friday of the month. Even though its a working day, the idea is to spread the message in a live form to a larger commuter base. If it were to be on a weekend, it would simply be a weekend leisure ride and therefore lose its purpose. CM helps in recognizing the importance of respect that cyclists, who commute daily, deserve. India is still not convinced about promoting cycling as a means of urban transport. It is still considered a mode of transport for those who cannot afford to buy a car. The cycle is a great way of commuting without adding to the already increasing pollution, it also reduces traffic congestion on roads and helps bring down average speeds on the road also helping keep fit in a work-out regimen thats on the go !! Aint that killing two birds with a single bike ;) Taking into consideration that some of these bikes cost more than the cheapest cars available on the market, it is the mindset of the commuter base that needs to be changed at a grassroots level.

Around the world Amsterdam (Netherlands), New York, San Francisco, Chicago and Portland (in USA), London (UK) and Paris (France) boast of a flourishing bicycle culture. There are some Indian cities like Pondicherry, where cyclists form a large part of the traffic on the roads.
